Although Hastings gave its name to the Battle of Hastings — when William II of Normandy defeated King Harold II of England in 1066 — it’s over 6 miles south-east of the battle site, which itself became the town of Battle, forming around the Abbey that was built in 1095 to commemorate the Norman Conquest.
